These photographs capture moments from the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation’s (VOC) candlelight vigil in Washington, D.C., on the occasion of the 34th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre by the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army. Speakers representing Chinese, Hongkonger, Tibetan, and Uyghur diasporas spoke at the observation. The vigil was held at the VOC Memorial statue at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and New Jersey Avenue, just blocks away from Union Station. Dedicated in 2007 by President George W. Bush, the memorial reads “To the more than one hundred million victims of communism and to those who love liberty” and, “To the freedom and independence of all captive nations and peoples.”
