Dan Garrett, PhD, is an author, documentary photographer, freelance photojournalist, political scientist, and visual sociologist documenting Chinese security politics and securitization of Hong Kong. A principal at Securing Tianxia LLC, he has a nearly 20-year engagement with the city and was a photographic contributor to Hong Kong Free Press. Between 2011 and 2019, he documented over 700 demonstrations, marches, protests and rallies and several elections in the Special Administrative Region. His first book, Counter-Hegemonic Resistance in China’s Hong Kong: Visualizing Protest in the City, photographically documented and interrogated the Region’s Pre-Umbrella Revolution protest culture. In September 2019, he briefed the Congressional-Executive Commission on China regarding China’s erosion of Hong Kong’s limited democracy, freedoms and liberties and was subsequently banned by communist authorities from reentering the city. Dan’s visual work on the birth of the Water Revolution has been exhibited at the Hong Kong Human Rights Forum at the U.S. Capital Visitor Center. His photography on Hong Kong protests and political culture has been published in several leading academic publications and has been presented at conferences around the world. Previously a former professional kickboxer and martial arts instructor, Dan's martial arts sports imagery has been published in Blackbelt Magazine, and Inside Kungfu, and he was the official photographer of the 1995 World Wushu Championships in Baltimore, Maryland. Based today in the Washington, D.C.-area and available for assignments across the Mid-Atlantic and East Coast, Dan works on documentary and photojournalist projects, in addition to nature and conservation wildlife photography. Prior to becoming an academic and visual storyteller, Dan was a career U.S. national security professional. He has lived and worked in Asia for more than a decade (Hong Kong and Japan).
