The International Myanmar Democratic Network and its allies held solidarity rallies and a march on 6 March 2021 in Washington, D.C. to mobilize international support and protest a military coup and violent state repression of pro-democracy anti-coup demonstrators by the Tatmadaw, Myanmar’s military. Since the coup in February 2021, the military junta has used lethal force against protesters and the ousted democratically elected National League for Democracy (NLD). They have also detained many government officials and members of Parliament, most famously, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. This series of photographs are taken at the Washington Monument in the United States’ capitol in the District of Columbia. The activists had earlier demonstrated outside the embassies of supporters of the Myanmar military junta such as the People’s Republic of China, and Singapore, prior to marching to the obelisk. The “Three-finger salute” has its origins from “The Hunger Games” and has appeared in other pro-democracy protests in Asia such as during Hong Kong’s 2014 and 2019 Umbrella and Water Revolutions respectively, and in 2014 (and 2020) against a military coup in Thailand.
