The Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) held an event on 28 February 2023 outside the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., observing the two-year anniversary of the mass arrest of 47 pro-democracy leaders in Hong Kong (HK) by the Communist authorities and their Special Administrative Region (SAR) proxies. The Hong Kong democrats were arrested on 6 January 2021 for alleged conspiracy to commit subversion under the Chinese Communist imposed National Security Law in July 2020 – for simply nothing more than organizing to select candidates to stand for election in hopes of winning a pro-democracy majority in the Legislative Council.

Select Committee chairman Representative Mike Gallagher, and committee member Representative Dusty Johnson, both spoke at the event calling for the release of the Hong Kong 47 and all political prisoners in the HKSAR, accompanied by Hong Kong and Human Rights activists in exile such as Joey Siu, Francis Hui, Sunny Cheung, and Jeffrey Ngo. Hongkonger advocacy organizations included The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation, and the Hong Kong Democracy Council.
